Precision Machining

Velosity is a precision machining company built for medical device, aerospace, defense, and industrial programs where tolerance and traceability matter. Our machine shop runs 83 CNC machining centers, 56 CNC Swiss machines, and 25 EDM machines. We routinely manufacture precision-machined components with tight tolerances of .0001 inch or less, in materials ranging from stainless steel and titanium to PEEK and other high-performance polymers.

Every program starts with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) review from our engineering team, so designs are optimized for precision and reliability before they reach full production. From there, we support prototyping through medium- and high-volume production, backed by ISO 13485:2016, AS9100D, and ISO 9001:2015 certifications.

Design for Precision Machining Whitepaper

Our whitepaper breaks down the five core elements we cover in every precision machining DFM review: assembly fit/function, raw material selection, challenging features, inspection and tolerancing, and estimated annual usage. We’ll explain how getting them right early reduces scrap, shortens lead time, and improves OTIF delivery.

Velosity Lab™

Velosity’s Engineering, Launch, and Optimization Lab™ is a dedicated area on the Brooklyn Park campus where new precision machining projects are explored and proven. The space supports early-stage product and process development, providing engineers with a controlled environment to test concepts, fine-tune performance, and establish reliable manufacturing methods.

Instead of relying on production machines, all development activities take place within this separate lab, preventing bottlenecks, keeping customer programs moving, and allowing closer technical collaboration with medical device and defense OEMs.

Coolant-Free Swiss Machining

We continue our reputation for innovative manufacturing solutions for our customers. Dry Swiss machining (Coolant-free) is considered the cleanest manufacturing technique and a requirement in today’s Class II and Class III medical device machining industry.

Velosity has made facility investments to establish a dedicated white room for dry machining. This ensures our customers can achieve the critical manufacturing objectives that dry Swiss machining requires.

PRECISION MACHINING

Hard-Milling

Velosity’s highly experienced team is equipped with the latest and best machinery in the industry. Hard milling is used for both component and mold manufacturing. Surface finishes achieved often do not require any post-machining processing.

PRECISION MACHINING

Mill-Turning

Our mill-turning centers save our customers time and money each year by merging multiple operations into one, eliminating setup time, reducing operations, and enhancing part quality. Early involvement of the Velosity design team leads to a successful on-time launch and cost containment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Precision Machining?

Precision machining is a subtractive manufacturing process in which CNC-controlled equipment removes material from metal, plastic, or other materials to create components with precise dimensions and complex geometries. Velosity’s precision machining capabilities support tight-tolerance components, from prototypes and NPI through medium- and high-volume production. Depending on the application and feature, Velosity routinely manufactures components with tolerances within 0.0001 inch or less. Our capabilities include multi-axis milling, CNC Swiss machining, mill-turning, EDM, and more, supporting medical device, defense, aerospace, and industrial applications.

What Is Precision Medical Machining?

Precision medical machining is the CNC manufacturing of components used in medical devices and life sciences applications. It supports the production of complex, tight-tolerance components where dimensional accuracy, surface finish, material selection, repeatability, and traceability are critical. Velosity’s precision machining capabilities support medical device manufacturers from prototyping and development through new product introduction and production. Our quality systems and manufacturing processes are designed to meet the demanding requirements of medical device manufacturing, with capabilities including CNC Swiss machining, multi-axis milling, mill-turning, and EDM.

How Do I Choose a Precision Machine Shop?

When selecting a precision machining partner, consider the company’s capabilities, quality systems, industry experience, and ability to support your project from development through production. Look for a manufacturer that:

  • Has the CNC machining capabilities and equipment required for your components, including milling, turning, Swiss machining, multi-axis machining, or EDM
  • Maintains established quality systems and relevant certifications
  • Has experience manufacturing components for your industry and application
  • Has experience machining the specific metals, alloys, and engineering plastics required for your design
  • Can provide engineering and manufacturability support to help optimize designs for production
  • Can support your requirements from prototyping and development through production

Velosity combines precision machining capabilities, experienced engineering support, and established quality systems to help medical device, aerospace and defense, and industrial customers move complex components from development into production.

What Tolerances Can High Precision CNC Machining Achieve?

Precision CNC machining can achieve extremely tight tolerances, with tolerances within 0.0001 inch or less possible depending on the application, feature, material, machine, tooling, and part geometry. Multi-axis machining can reduce the number of setups required for complex geometries, helping improve consistency and minimize potential variation. At Velosity, components are machined to customer print specifications, with critical dimensions verified through in-process and final inspection.

What Materials Can Be Precision Machined?

Precision CNC machining works on many metals and engineering plastics, including stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, Inconel, brass, and PEEK. Material selection depends on the strength, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, or weight requirements for your application. Velosity machines components for medical device, defense, and industrial programs, each with distinct material and surface finish standards. Contact our team to discuss your requirements.
